Hello Kitty is a brand that little girls love and enjoy. It’s a brand that is well recognized among children, and highly sought after by all. It is simply too bad that the Hello Kitty Digital Camera does not live up to the expectations of the name. There are several different Hello Kitty Digital cameras available, but I’ll be discussing the more advanced 5.1 mega-pixel camera.
Now of course your little one will enjoy and fall in love with the colors and style of the camera, which holds true to the traditional Hello Kitty colors and recognizable Hello Kitty cat. They may even take pride and care in being able to choose which cover they put on the camera, from the all black one it comes with by default to the pink or red ones you can change it to. Beyond that, things go wrong.
4 Reason Why You Should NOT Buy the Hello Kitty Digital Camera
Expensive Camera – The first issue is the price. You can get lower quality, but still pretty good quality digital cameras for adults for the price that is being asked for with this children’s camera. At almost $50 for this Hello Kitty camera new in stores, it rivals the price tag of many well known brand names of digital cameras. Not the price a parent wants to pay for a toy that may get wrecked or lost.
Out of Focus Pictures – Little kids have shaky hands, and this camera does nothing to offset that. Unless your child fancies taking a photo with the Hello Kitty camera sitting on the table or some flat surface, you’ll have shaky out of focus pictures for sure. Even the steadiest of adults may find this camera frustrating for that very same reason.
Cheap LCD Preview Screen – If you really enjoy the ability of previewing a picture by using the 1.5” LCD screen, you and your child will be quite disappointed. A dark screen produces barely visual images that are anything but what you’ll actually get when your little one takes the photo.
Horrible One-Button Feature – And then of course is the one button that does everything issue. Sure it makes it easier for your child to learn, but no regular camera works this way. So, they will have to learn all over again once they get a “real digital camera” to take pictures with. This one button approach also has a fatal flaw. You click once and it turns on, great, click twice, whether on purpose or by mistake it takes a picture, we’re still good, accidentally click it more than that and you are now turning on and off the flash and even deleting the pictures you’ve already taken. And this is designed for a child??? What a horrible set up.

My Recommendation: Stay Away from Hello Kitty Digital Cameras
If you’re looking for a digital camera for you little aspiring artist, buyer beware the Hello Kitty Digital Camera is nothing but a $50 big piece of plastic, ready for the landfill from the first time you open the wrapper! There are several other Hello Kitty digital cameras, but none of them get any decent reviews, so your best bet is to stay far away from all of them. These are cheaply made cameras with a high price tag just because they are Hello Kitty cameras.
Update: A new 7.1MP was just released and adds Anti-Shake technology (image stabilizer) to help keep the pictures in focus. The picture quality has also been improved. They upgraded the LCD preview screen to 1.8” up from 1.5”. However, they discontinued the 3 interchangeable faceplates and decreased the battery requirements to 2 AAA batteries. It also has a 4x digital zoom and red eye reduction. It’s definitely an upgrade from the 5.1MP Hello Kitty Digital Camera, but I still think you could get a much better camera for that price. You could easily find a camera that’s more user friendly and that can take much better pictures. This is marketed towards kids, but to me this is more of an adult novelty camera because it’s not user friendly and it really doesn’t take that great of photos.
